As we near Thanksgiving it's important to remember the serious fire and life safety risks that this holiday brings. According to the New York State Fire Administrator, there are approximately 1400 home cooking fires each year on Thanksgiving Day. Understanding the cause of these common cooking fires should help you eliminate your fire and injury risks.

Remember these cooking safety basics:

- Never leave cooking unattended.
- If you have a small fire while cooking on the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid or baking sheet over the pan
and turning off the burner until cooled.
- For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.
- Keep children away from the stove and areas where hot food is being prepared.
- If frying a turkey, make sure it's completely thawed prior to cooking.
